Navy Chief History

The chief petty officer, as recognized today, was officially established 1 April 1893. The earliest known use of the term "chief petty officer", dates back to 1776 where the term "chief cook" was used, but not officially recognized.

Naval Services FamilyLine also has a great publication, "Guidelines for the Spouses of Chief Petty Officers", that serves as a resource for newly selected spouses of CPO's as they transition into the Navy CPO family and season.
