Powers of Attorney

A power of attorney (POA) is a legal document in which your Sailor gives you the legal authority to act in his/her place and on his/her behalf when you are apart. It is written for a specific period of time, ie: 6 months or 1 year. Make sure you plan for possible extensions to deployments, etc.

Often, pre-deployment work-ups include preparation of a POA. You may also obtain a POA free of charge at any military legal assistance office. Visit http://www.jag.navy.mil/index.htm for a complete list of legal services in your area and to print a worksheet for a POA.

Join us for a Virtual COMPASS class to learn more about POA's and other important information you need when your Sailor deploys!
